Here are 15+ summer sewing project ideas for when it’s way too hot outside and you’d prefer to spend time in the air conditioning!
Here in the South, the summers are brutal. I’m talking hot and humid as heck. It’s the type of weather that’s only good when you’re at the beach or poolside. I find summer to be the best time for me to get some serious sewing in. For you, if you live in different climates, winter might be that time for you, but if you live in the South, you understand me.
I’ve thought a lot about what summer sewing project ideas I wanted to accomplish this year before Fall and I thought it’d be fun to share them with you!

Scrap Sewing Project Ideas
I have a TON of scrap fabric right now, so I spent some time looking for projects that would utilize it all, but also were practical and useful in my home.
Floor Frogs: If you’ve never heard of floor frogs or floor turtles, they’re honestly genius. They’re little “frogs” that live on your floor and are there to clean up quick messes, like melted ice cubes. They’re sewn in the shape of a frog or turtle, have an absorbent side and a cute side. I can’t wait to make a few of these because I know I’ll use them a ton, especially in my kitchen.

Quilted Jar Cozy: For years I’ve used a crochet jar cozy that is cute and helps to soak up all the condensation from my iced coffees. I love it, but I’ve been seeing these cute quilted jar cozies all over Pinterest and I think they’d be so fun to make and to have in my home.

Cast Iron Protectors: I exclusively use cast iron frying pans and I have a handful of them, usually stacked on my stovetop or in a cabinet. I love these quilted pan protectors I found and think they’d be fairly easy to make. While I don’t think they’re super necessary, they do seem like a fun and useful project.

Pin Cushion: Currently I use one of those tomato pin cushions that you can get at any craft store and I find that it dulls my pins. However, a few months ago I discovered that you can make your own and it’s a project I’ve got to try! This particular pin cushion can be put on your wrist for quick pin access and it looks like a really quick and easy project.

Elbow/Wrist Saver: I have a weird set-up with my computer that means I often am resting my elbows on my desk, and let me tel you, it’s not super comfortable. I’d love to make an elbow/wrist saver that makes working at my desk much more comfortable.

Connie Tree Skirt: Last year I purchased the Connie Tree Skirt pattern by Syd Graham and never got around to making it. So this year I’ve made it a priority to make a tree skirt so I have it ready in time for Christmas. We’ve never had a proper tree skirt and I love the idea of having one that I made that can be passed down someday to my children.

Basket Liner: I have a few baskets around my house that could use a liner. I think for certain baskets, liners really add a little something special, and they’re pretty easy to make, which is a great bonus.
Ruffle Lamp Shade: I recently thrifted a small lamp that fits perfectly in my kitchen, which adds a bit of coziness to the space. However, the shade is really boring and just blends into the backsplash. I would love to add a pop of color with a cute ruffle lampshade cover.

Oven Curtain: An oven curtain is really just a cute tea towel that’s attached to the bar of your oven with ties. They’re absolutely adorable and I think it’s a great way to add a little extra coziness and whimsy to your kitchen.

Pillowcases: I’m working on shifting all our linens to 100% cotton and our pillowcases are the last thing. I recently had to buy new sheets because our old ones ripped beyond repair. BUT I have enough fabric to make new pillowcases to replace the polyester ones. This is a simple project, but a necessary one.
KitchenAid Sliding Mat: If you’ve never heard of a KitchenAid sliding mat, they’re honestly such a life saver. It’s basically a couple pieces of fabric quilted and sewn together that you place under your mixer. It helps you slide it around easily on your countertop, as opposed to having to pick up the machine every time you need to move it a bit. I have a full tutorial on how to make them here, but I’d love to add another one to my collection.

Beginner Sewing Friendly Clothing Projects
**I have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to clothing projects and ideas. You can find it here!**
Ganni Top (Syd Tie Top Hack): Last year I started dabbling in clothes making and I’ve really enjoyed it. So far I’ve only made bottoms, but I’d love to venture into top making. Syd Graham’s Ganni Top dupe was absolutely adorable and something a little different than I’m used to wearing. I want to add pieces I love to my wardrobe, so I’m really hopefully this will hit the mark. I purchased the Syd Tie Top pattern and I’m excited to give this hack a try.
Lane Pants Shorts Hack: I’ve determined my summer uniform will be oversized t-shirts and cute cotton elastic waist shorts. I’ve pinned a ton of inspiration on Pinterest and I’m determined to make it happen. I’m excited to make my own using the Lane Pants pattern that I already own and can hack.
Thrifted Clothes Flips: I love a good thrift flip, whether that be a clothing flip or a furniture flip. I thrifted a few pieces that I loved the fabric of, but needed a revamp. I’m excited to give the pieces new life.
Hemming Thrifted Shirts: If you’re anything like me, a shorty, you may have a hard time wearing oversized shirts. For me, they’re always way too long and not flattering at all. One of my summer projects is to round up all those graphic tees and hem them to fit me better. It’s a quick project, but an impactful one.
Top/Bottom Sets: I’m not typically a set girl when it comes to clothing, but I think they’re so cute. I’ve got some fabric in mind that I purchased at an estate sale that will make the perfect summer set.
