Easy Homemade Peppermint Mocha Coffee

Peppermint and chocolate are two flavors that no holiday season is complete without. These two flavors are really complimentary to each other and make this homemade peppermint mocha coffee absolutely delicious and the perfect drink for Christmas morning, or any time during the holiday season!

Peppermint mocha is such a classic holiday coffee drink, made famous by Starbucks, of course, but can I tell you something that may be a bit controversial? I DON’T like Starbucks’ peppermint mocha. There I said it. Don’t come at me! For me, it’s too rich and way too sweet for my liking. That being said, I really enjoy the flavors of peppermint and chocolate, and wanted to create a peppermint mocha coffee drink with far less sugar and that was a bit more palatable. This drink has subtle notes of peppermint and chocolate, and is topped with fluffy homemade whipped cream. It’s absolutely delicious and perfect for the holiday season to enjoy!

PIN FOR LATER!

TOOLS YOU MAY NEED

  • Your favorite mug (preferably 12 oz or bigger)
  • A stand mixer, electric mixer or whisk (only if you’re making your own whipped cream)
  • Piping bag (optional)
  • Plastic baggie
  • Spoon

INGREDIENTS

  • COFFEE: A good brand of coffee or a good cup of coffee is essential to making this homemade peppermint mocha extra special. You can use any kind of coffee brand that is your favorite. I tend to like a light or medium roast. Some affordable options I enjoy are Starbucks’ Veranda and the McCafe medium roast. You could also use espresso or cappuccino as the base for this drink as well.
  • CHOCOLATE SAUCE: You can use a store bought chocolate sauce or fudge sauce to top this drink. You could also make your own homemade chocolate sauce as well. It’s super easy!
  • CRUSHED PEPPERMINT CANDY: Place a candy cane or peppermint candy in a plastic baggie, seal it and whack it across a hard surface like your counter to break it up into pieces. You could also use a food processor or blender to do this step as well. Save what you don’t use for your next peppermint mocha coffee!
  • HOMEMADE WHIPPED CREAM: You can use Cool Whip as a topping or you can simply make your own like I did. Start by whipping together about 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream with 1 to 2 teaspoons of powdered sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla for about 1 minute in your stand mixer or with your electric mixer. You can also whisk by hand and get the same result, it just may take longer. Beat the mixture until stiff peaks form.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE PEPPERMINT MOCHA COFFEE

Start off with brewing a cup of your favorite coffee in your favorite mug, preferably one that is on the larger side so you can fit all that yummy whipped cream and toppings in there!

coffee in a red cup

Next add 5-7 drops of peppermint extract to the coffee. I find that I like about 7 drops, but you could add less or more depending on your preference. Always start with less and add more. Stir that thoroughly.

Add a spoonful of chocolate sauce, then a splash of heavy whipping cream. Add as much or little to make it exactly how you like your coffee. You could omit the splash of cream too. Stir the drink continuously for about 30 seconds until the chocolate sauce and heavy whipping cream is incorporated.

Top with homemade whipped cream, a drizzle of chocolate sauce and some crushed peppermint candies. If you want to be a little extra fancy, you could pipe your whipped cream on with a piping bag and tip.

There you have it, a delicious homemade peppermint mocha coffee drink that is easy to make and absolutely delicious! This is a wonderful treat to have throughout the holiday season and even something special to make on Christmas morning.

NOTES

  • This drink is great served hot or cold.
  • Try blending coffee, chocolate sauce, peppermint extract and heavy whipping cream with some ice. Add to a glass and top with whipped cream, chocolate sauce and crushed candies!
  • You can make the base of this coffee ahead of time and place in the refrigerator. Shake well before drinking and top with your favorite toppings.
  • If you don’t have peppermint candies, you could instead add a few drops of peppermint extract to your whipped cream.

This looks beautiful and delicious! I wish I liked coffee because it looks so divine, but I would need to either have very weak coffee, or add a ton of sugar. I know my BFF would LOVE this though.
