Learn how to refresh your home without spending money, simply by shopping your home and getting creative with some easy projects.

Have you ever looked around your home and felt like everything needed a refresh—but your budget said otherwise?
I’ve been there.
Sometimes it’s not that our homes are lacking anything. We simply get so used to seeing the same furniture, décor, and everyday items that we stop noticing their potential. It’s easy to convince ourselves that a new season requires a shopping trip, but I’ve found that some of the best home updates come from using what you already have.
Recently, I gave our screened-in patio a complete refresh without spending a single dollar. Every project was made from supplies I already owned, things tucked away in closets, leftovers from previous DIY projects, or items that simply needed a new purpose.
The experience reminded me that creating a cozy, beautiful home isn’t about buying more—it’s about seeing your home with fresh eyes.
If you’re looking for budget-friendly home updates or wondering how to refresh your home without spending money, here are my favorite ways to shop your house first.
Why You Should Shop Your House Before Buying Anything
One of the easiest ways to save money on home decorating is to simply start with what you already own.
Most of us have decorative items packed away in closets, baskets stored in the garage, extra fabric folded on shelves, or artwork we’ve forgotten about. Instead of purchasing something new, challenge yourself to “shop” your own home first.
Not only does this save money, but it also helps reduce clutter by giving unused items a purpose again.
I’ve been slowly decluttering our home over the past several months, and something I’ve realized is that many of the things I almost donated simply needed to live somewhere different.
A new room can completely change how an item feels.
Start by Solving a Problem
When you’re thinking about updating a space, don’t start with decorating. Start by asking yourself what’s not working.
For us, it was a lot of things, but one big issue was shoes.
Our kids are constantly running in and out of the yard, which meant shoes and boots were always scattered across the porch. Instead of buying a storage basket, I remembered an old wooden crate sitting in the garage. It wasn’t perfect—it had a few broken boards—but with a little paint, it became the cutest little shoe bin.
That simple project made the patio feel cleaner almost instantly. Sometimes the most satisfying home updates aren’t decorative at all. They’re the ones that make everyday life a little easier.

Use What You Already Have
One thing I’ve been trying to do lately is use up the supplies I’ve collected over the years instead of buying more.
The first project I wanted to tackle were my outdoor pillows. The current pillowcases were black and white buffalo check. I wanted them to feel fresh and light for summer. So, I found a tutorial and made new outdoor pillow covers using fabric that had been sitting in my sewing stash. To make them feel a little softer and more cottage-inspired, I added a ruffle using a thrifted white bedsheet I’d been holding onto.
I also tackled the patio cushions, which had definitely seen better days. The covers were stained and torn, so I decided to sew new ones using fabric I’d purchased years ago on clearance.
I’d never made boxed cushion covers before, so it was definitely a learning experience. Actually… it was a bit of an adventure.
In an attempt to salvage the zippers and ties from the old cushions, I managed to pull the zipper sliders completely off three different zippers before finally giving up and replacing them with Velcro instead. Did they turn out perfectly? No, but the finished cushions look great, and no one would ever know the little mishaps that happened along the way.
Sometimes DIY projects don’t go perfectly, and that’s okay. A handmade home doesn’t have to be flawless to be beautiful.
Shop Your House with Fresh Eyes
One of my favorite changes didn’t involve making anything at all.
I found a piece of artwork that had been sitting in a closet since our apartment days. It didn’t have a place inside our current house, but hanging it on the patio wall instantly made the whole space feel finished.
I also flipped our outdoor rug over to the gray side, which blended much better with the flooring and allowed the furniture to become the focus.
Those two changes took only a few minutes, but they completely changed how the space felt.
Before you buy new décor, try walking through your home and looking at everything with fresh eyes. That basket in the bedroom might work better in the living room. Artwork in storage could become the perfect finishing touch on a porch. A lamp, blanket, or plant might completely transform another room.
Sometimes all an item needs is a new home.

Small Changes Make the Biggest Difference
Looking back, there wasn’t one project that completely transformed our patio. It was all the little things working together.
The shoe crate kept clutter under control. The new pillows made the seating feel lighter for summer. Fresh cushion covers made the furniture inviting again. The artwork added personality. The homemade citronella candles created a cozy atmosphere while keeping the mosquitoes away.
Individually, each project was simple, but together, they created a space where we genuinely want to spend our evenings.
That’s something I remind myself often when I’m tempted to tackle a huge makeover. You don’t have to change everything to make your home feel different. A handful of thoughtful updates can completely change the atmosphere of a room.
Refresh Your Home Without Spending Money
There’s so much pressure these days to constantly buy new things for our homes. Every season seems to come with a new collection of décor and another list of must-have items.
But I’ve found that some of my favorite spaces are the ones created with creativity instead of consumption.
Using what you already own saves money, helps reduce waste, and often results in a home that feels much more personal than one filled with brand-new purchases.
If you’ve been wanting to give your home a refresh, I encourage you to pause before heading to the store. Open the closets, look in the garage, dig through your craft supplies, pull artwork out of storage. You probably have more than you realize.
Our little porch makeover reminded me that a beautiful home isn’t about constantly buying new things. It’s about appreciating what you already have and finding new ways to use it.
