If you’re looking for a way to incorporate simpler ingredients into your cooking and baking, then you need to make your own brown sugar. You only need two ingredients to make homemade brown sugar, and once you start making it, you’ll never go back to store bought!
Over the last few years, I’ve been slowly transforming my pantry to include more high quality, healthier foods and ingredients. I first started by only buying unbleached flour instead of bleached. Then I started buying cane sugar instead of white sugar and it has just snowballed from there. I’ve continued slowly changing my buying habits and paying attention to labels more and more. And although this is quite the process, you learn a lot along the way and begin to see the value of simple, healthy ingredients in your cooking and baking.
One easy swap that I held off of for a really long time was better quality brown sugar. I had seen a few years ago just how easy it was to make your own brown sugar, but never even bothered giving it a try, until I did. And oh boy, what a difference I saw. Compared to store bought brown sugar, it’s more flavorful and so much more delicious. And even better yet, I know exactly what ingredients were used to make this brown sugar. There’s no yuck, no extra additives and I can feel good about using it in my kitchen!
