This beautiful DIY fall garland is made using simple materials like yarn and fabric pumpkins to create a statement in your living room, or anywhere else in your home!
If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you may have caught onto the fact that I love using the materials I have on hand, whether it be scraps or leftovers from a previous project, to create something new, beautiful and functional. This DIY fall garland is no exception. And while it’s not really functional, it provides warmth to my living room and is a great focal point for my entertainment center!
This garland is really simple to make and is so customizable. You can use any type of yarn or twine you have to make DIY pom poms and to create the garland itself. I really lucked out that I had yarn that matched the velvet pumpkins I found for 50% off at Hobby Lobby, but really the color combinations are endless and can be made to cater to your style! You could even make yarn pumpkins to display with your pom poms if you didn’t feel like making a trip to the craft store! In this tutorial, I’m going to teach you how to make DIY pom poms and the techniques I used to make this fall garland, so let’s get into it!

HOW TO MAKE A DIY FALL GARLAND
How to Make DIY Pom Poms with a Toilet Paper Tube
Cut a 1-2 inch slit on each side of the toilet paper tube.
Cut a 12 inch piece of yarn and place the ends through the slits of the toilet paper tube, making sure it’s centered.
Begin wrapping yarn over the cut piece of yarn and around the toilet paper tube 80-100 times.
Remove each end of the cut piece of yarn from the toilet paper tube and tie it as tight as possible twice.
Remove the yarn from the toilet paper roll, then wrap the ends of the cut piece of yarn around the yarn ball and tie it tightly again twice.
Cut the loops of the yarn.
Trim the yarn to create a nice pom pom, leaving the tails of the cut yarn long.
How to Create a Braided Garland with Twine
Measure the mantel or space you want to display your DIY fall garland, add 5 inches, then cut 9 strands of cotton twine or yarn.
Create three, three-strand braids with the twine. It’s easiest if you tape the three pieces of twine to a hard surface before braiding.
Braid the three-strand braids together to form a larger braided garland and tie a knot at each end.
How to Assemble a DIY Fall Garland with Fabric Pumpkins &Pom Poms
Lay the braided garland on a flat surface and lay out the pumpkins and pom poms how you like them.
Starting in the middle, thread the ends of the yarn of the pom pom through the braided garland using a yarn needle.
Then thread each piece of yarn back through the braided needle, then tie it in a double knot. Repeat for all pom poms.
Using a sewing needle and coordinating thread, sew the tops of the fabric pumpkins to the braided garland.
Hang your garland using command strips.
NOTES
- You can use a pom pom maker if you want varied sizes of pom poms that are more uniform.
- Layer a wood bead garland with the DIY fall garland to give it more depth.
- If you don’t want to sew the pumpkins and pom poms to the braided garland, you can hot glue them.
- Use rope or chunky yarn to avoid braiding the cotton twine.
