How to Make a Homemade Mint Chocolate Chip Latte

This homemade mint chocolate chip latte combines rich chocolate, bright mint and strong coffee, making it the perfect homemade coffee drink. No need to pay for an expensive fancy coffee when you can make your own at home!

While I normally stick with my super non-fancy cup of coffee with oat milk and some maple syrup, it’s fun to mix it up and make something fun once in a while, especially for a “holiday” like St. Patrick’s Day! When I think of St. Patrick’s Day, I of course think of green, and when it comes to drinks, I think of mint, like the famous Shamrock Shake!

A dolled up drink like this can often cost a pretty penny, but making it at home is easy and really inexpensive! All you need are a few ingredients, most of which you probably already have on hand, and a little bit of time. It’s also really customizable and perfect for a small gathering or an at-home coffee date. We’re all a little Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, so why not celebrate with a drink like this?!

TOOLS YOU MAY NEED

  • Coffee maker
  • Liquid measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Small saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Stand mixer or hand mixer and bowl
  • Spatula or spoon
  • Blender (optional)
  • 16 oz cup (mason jar works great)

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup brewed coffee
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tbsp chocolate chips (0.5 oz)
  • 1/4 tsp mint extract (more if desired)

HOW TO MAKE A MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP LATTE

Homemade Mint Whipped Cream

Make your own whipped cream by placing heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, mint extract and green food coloring (optional) in the bowl of a stand mixer. With the whisk attachment, whisk for 1-2 minutes or until stiff peaks form. Place the mint whipped cream in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it.

Mint Chocolate Chip Latte

Brew a cup of your favorite coffee and pour it into a large 16 oz cup like a mason jar.

In a sauce pan, place milk, heavy whipping cream, chocolate chips and mint extract. Turn the heat to low-medium and whisk until the chocolate is completely melted and everything is well combined. Allow the mixture to heat up until it is steaming but not simmering or boiling.

Blend the chocolate mixture in a blender, use a milk frother to froth or simply place in a jar with a lid and shake it until frothy.

Pour the chocolate mixture over top of your cup of coffee.

Top the mint chocolate chip latte with homemade mint whipped cream and shredded chocolate if desired.

NOTES

  • Dairy-free/Vegan option: Replace the milk and heavy whipping cream with non-dairy milk like oat milk, cashew milk or almond milk (something with a thicker consistency). Replace the milk chocolate chips with dairy free chocolate chips. You can top with coconut cream instead.
  • Use Cool Whip instead of homemade whipped cream for the topping.
  • If you’re making this for kids, try making this with hot chocolate as the base instead!
  • If you want to make this a boozy drink, add in something like Chocolate Liqueur or Irish Cream!

Its 6:32am and I am craving this right now. I love how it easy it is to make and we don’t have to pawn our third child to make it like those expensive coffee places. 😀
