Strip a wicker basket with oven cleaner to take it from dated to a beautiful piece of decor in less than an hour!
When I go to the thrift store, I always check to see if there are any good baskets there. For some reason, I’ve really been loving incorporating them into my home decor. I think they give a nice cozy look and are also super functional. Baskets can also be super expensive at the store, so whenever I can get a good deal on a basket, I take it. A while back, I thrifted this wicker basket for a few dollars. I wasn’t in love with the finish, but I thought it would be useful.
I’ve been really into the more natural look when it comes to the different wood decor in my home, so on a whim, I decided this basket needed a face lift! Recently I made over this wooden chair and the easiest way I found to strip the old varnish off was using oven cleaner! It’s super affordable and works really well. I had a feeling it would work great on this wicker basket and it certainly did! In less than an hour I was able to strip this wicker basket and I’m so happy with the final result. It now looks nice and natural and fits in much better with my style. Let me show you how easy it is!

HOW TO STRIP A WICKER BASKET WITH OVEN CLEANER
TOOLS YOU MAY NEED
- Fume free oven cleaner
- Gloves
- Scrub brush or toothbrush
- Spray bottle with soapy water
- Cup of clean water
DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO STRIP A WICKER BASKET WITH OVEN CLEANER
On a protected surface in a well-ventilated area, generously spray your wicker basket with oven cleaner and allow it to sit for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, spray the wicker basket with soapy water. Then use a scrub brush or old toothbrush to gently scrub away the paint or finish, rinsing the brush periodically.
Once the finish is removed from the wicker basket, rinse it with a hose or in the bathtub.
Allow the wicker basket to dry for 12-24 hours and that’s it!
NOTES
- I recommend using the Great Value fume free oven cleaner because it’s super affordable and doesn’t have a harsh smell.
- If needed, you can repeat steps 1 and 2 several times until all of the paint or finish are removed and you achieve your desired look.
- The wicker will become soft when it’s wet, so be mindful of that when you’re handling it.
- Bleach your wicker basket to further lighten it if you’re going for a lighter final result.

Hi Stacy! Thank you ๐ Although I haven’t done it with painted wicker, oven cleaner should also remove paint, you just may need to give it a bit more scrubbing to get paint out of cracks and crevices. I’d suggest using the method I used in the tutorial, then go in with an old toothbrush to really remove the rest of the paint while it’s still wet. If you give it a try, I’d love to hear how it goes ๐
