- Paint (optional)
TOOLS YOU MAY NEED
- Parchment paper or silicone mat
- Rolling pin or cylinder of some kind
- Knife
- Ruler
- Rubber or metal stamps
- Cutting mat or cutting board
- Baking sheet
- Paint brushes (optional)
DIRECTIONS FOR HOW TO MAKE DIY CLAY GARDEN MARKERS
Start by taping down a piece of parchment paper to a cutting board or cutting mat.
Take a golf ball sized amount of polymer clay and knead it until it’s soft and workable.
Shape the clay into a rectangle, then roll it out to about 1/4″ thickness. Be sure to turn the clay over as you’re rolling to prevent it from sticking.
If any air bubbles occur, use a knife or your fingernails to remove them, then roll the clay out again.
Using a ruler or a straight edge, cut the clay into a rectangle that is 6 inches tall by 3/4 inches wide rectangles.
At the 5 inch mark, cut a point on the bottom of the marker.
Use your stamps to write out your desired words.
Place the clay garden markers on a lined sheet and bake them as specified by package of clay (mine was 275°F for 30 minutes).
Allow the garden markers to cool down completely before decorating!
WAYS TO CUSTOMIZE CLAY GARDEN MARKERS
- Use cookie cutters for a fun shaped garden marker. Just remember to create a part at the bottom that will be placed in the soil.
- If you don’t have stamps, use a toothpick to handwrite plant names.
- Use a small leaf to create a beautiful imprint in the clay.
- Use your favorite paint to create designs on your markers.
- Use permanent markers to fill in the plant names so they’re easier to see.
NOTES
- Make the clay markers skinnier or wider depending on how you’ll be using them. You may need to make them longer if you’re using them in an outdoor garden.
- When rolling out the clay, it’s important to flip it over a few times during the process so it doesn’t stick.
- When the polymer clay has baked, it will remain flexible, which is totally normal.
- These garden markers work best in pots, but can be placed in soft ground soil. They are not hard enough to be pounded into the soil though.
- If you’re using them outside, you may want to consider sealing them.
