Made with simple, nourishing ingredients, this homemade whipped tallow body butter is a natural way to hydrate the skin.
Homemade body butters are one of my favorite skincare products to make at home because they’re super easy to whip up, pun intended, and are made with quality ingredients that you get to hand select. Which is wonderful since I love knowing exactly what ingredients are in the products I use in my home when possible. Now, it may seem weird to use an animal fat on your skin, but beef tallow actually has a lot of great benefits and is a relatively inexpensive skincare ingredient, especially if you render the tallow yourself. Tallow is great at hydrating and nourishing your skin, as it contains vitamins A, D and K, as well as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. It’s also non-comedogenic, which means it will not clog your pores, making it a great addition to your full-body skin care routine.

FAQs
Where do I find tallow?
You can find beef tallow at the grocery store, online at places like Amazon or you can render it yourself for even cheaper.
How long is homemade body butter good for?
This recipe for whipped tallow body butter is good for up to two years. But to calculate it for yourself, look at the shelf-life of all the ingredients you’re adding. The ingredient that has the shortest shelf-life will be the length of time your particular body butter is good for. For example, all my ingredients have a shelf life of 2 years, therefore, my body butter will have a shelf life of 2 years.
How do you use tallow body butter?
You can use this whipped tallow body butter on, you guessed it, your whole body! I would recommend testing it out on your arm in a small spot first before proceeding to using on the whole body, but the ingredients are really gentle and shouldn’t cause any irritation. You can use this on your face as well. Again, everyone is different so see what works best for yuor.
How do you store body butter?
Store this in an airtight container away from heat and sun, and in a cool dry place.

How to Make Homemade Whipped Tallow Body Butter
Tools You May Need:
- Pan and heat proof bowl
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Stand mixer or hand mixer
- Spatula
- Airtight glass container(s)
Materials Needed:
- 1/2 cup beef tallow
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 1 tbs jojoba oil
- 1-2 tbs arrowroot powder
- 30 drops essential oils
Directions
Bring water in a saucepan to a rolling bowl and add a heat-safe bowl on top. In the bowl add in the beef tallow and shea butter and allow them to melt completely.
Once they are fully melted, remove the bowl from the double-broiler and allow the mixture to cool slightly for about 5 minutes, then stir in essential oils and jojoba oil.
Refrigerate the mixture for an hour or until it has solidified and you can make an indent with your finger.
Place the mixture into a stand mixer, or use a hand mixer to whip the body butter.
Scrape the sides of the bowl and add the arrowroot powder.
Beat the body butter for a few more minutes until it turns white.
Place the whipped tallow body butter in an airtight glass container for future use!
NOTES
- To solidify the body butter quicker, you can place it in the freezer instead.
- This recipe makes enough for one pint or two half pints.
- You can replace the shea butter for cocoa butter if you desire for more of a cocoa scent.
- In place of the jojoba oil, you can use fractionated coconut oil or any other oil that is liquid at room temperature, but it may change the shelf life and whether or not the body butter is non-comedogenic.
