Add a personalized touch to your kitchen decor with these easy crochet pot holders. In a couple of hours using this free crochet pot holder pattern, you can have a functional and beautiful addition to your kitchen!
I really enjoy creating pieces for my home that are not only functional, but also beautiful. A few years ago, I made a couple of crochet pot holders and I’ve used them every day since. What I love about them is you can easily wash and dry them and they come out looking practically brand new every time. I decided it was time I needed a second set of pot holders so that I can have them in constant rotation so I never go without!
This free crochet pot holder pattern is really easy and great for those beginner crocheters that have mastered the basic stitches. This crochet pattern combines a combination of a single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet to create a beautiful almost grid-like effect. The combination of stitches is also known as the sedge stitch and I have to say, it’s one of my new favorites!
The great thing about this free crochet pattern is that it can be customized to your liking. Use the colors that work best in your kitchen, make it bigger or smaller, et cetera. I love to use pot holders for a variety of things, including a hot pad. I also really love giving things like this as gifts. People really appreciate the time it takes to make a handmade gift and most definitely will love these!

HOW TO MAKE A CROCHET POT HOLDER
MATERIALS
- 2 skeins of 100% cotton yarn (ecru and black)
TOOLS YOU MAY NEED
- 6mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
DIRECTIONS TO CROCHET A POT HOLDER
Start by chaining 21 (or multiples or 3).
In the second chain from the hook, work a half double crochet, then in the same chain, work a double crochet.
Skip two chains, then work a single crochet, then a half double crochet, then a double crochet in the same chain. Repeat this until the end of the row.
At the end of the row, work a single crochet in the last stitch, chain one and turn your work. Repeat steps 2-3 for the next 12 rows, until you have a total of 13 rows.
Once you’ve completed the pot holder, to add a loop, chain 10, then slip stitch into the last single crochet.
Weave in the ends using a yarn needle and you’re done!
NOTES
- Use 2 strands of yarn to create a thick pot holder.
- 2 skeins of this yarn will make three pot holders.
- If you’d like to, you can add a border to make the edges look a bit more even.
- I used the sedge stitch to create these potholders.
- You can wash your pot holders in the washer on cold, then either air dry or dry on low.
