Homemade chocolate sauce is easy to make, only contains a handful ingredients and is better than any store bought chocolate sauce you can find!
Chocolate sauce is not an item that we typically keep on hand, mainly because it’s not something we use on a regular basis. However, during the holiday season and once in a while during the summer, it’s a lovely addition to yummy coffee drinks and to drizzle over ice cream!
While there are definitely convenience foods and condiments I buy, I try to make as much as I can from scratch. I like to know the ingredients that go into our food and it helps me to better control quality of ingredients as well. When it comes to foods that we don’t eat on a regular basis and that are more of a treat, I especially try to make my own. Some of my favorite dessert components include homemade jam, homemade caramel sauce and this delicious homemade chocolate sauce. Let’s get into the recipe!

TOOLS YOU MAY NEED
- Medium sauce pan
- Whisk
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Airtight storage container
INGREDIENTS
What I like about this recipe is that it doesn’t contain any corn syrup. A lot of dessert recipes tend to include corn syrup, which we try to avoid in our house. Although this recipe contains a lot of sugar, the good news is that typically you aren’t consuming a lot, so I say a little sugar once in a while is okay.
- 2 tbs unsalted butter
- 4 tbs chocolate chips or shredded chocolate (2 oz)
- 1-2 tbs cocoa powder (optional)
- Pinch salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tsps vanilla
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE SAUCE
Add butter and chocolate to a saucepan and place over low-medium heat. Stir the ingredients together until the chocolate melts and the mixture is homogenous. Be sure not to over cook this because it can create a grainy or gritty texture if cooked too long. Be sure to allow the chocolate and butter to melt and then immediately move to the next step.
Then stir in the cocoa powder, sugar, salt and water and mix until combined.Stir constantly, taking breaks here and there, until sauce is as thick as you’d like. This takes around 10-15 minutes to get the right consistency.
Take the sauce pan off the burner and stir in the vanilla.
Allow the chocolate sauce to cool slightly before using or cool completely and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 2 weeks.
NOTES
- I like to use semi-sweet chocolate chips in this recipe, but you can use any type of chocolate you prefer.
- If you’re using shredded or chopped chocolate, you’ll need about 2 oz.
- Do not allow this homemade chocolate sauce to come to a boil. It will simmer slightly, but you want to be careful not to burn it.
- Stirring constantly creates a nice smooth texture.
- If you’re using this once it’s cooled, stir for a few seconds to break up any lumps there may be.
- This recipe makes about 1 1/2 cups of homemade chocolate sauce.
HOW TO STORE HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE SAUCE
You can use this chocolate sauce immediately or you can store it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. I like to store mine in a glass mason jar with an airtight lid, but you can use whatever container you prefer. When you’re ready to use, simply scoop out a portion and use as is or reheat it to have a thinner consistency!

Great recipe! It would be easy to make it dairy free by using plant butter and dairy free chocolate chips!

Thank you, great point! I might have to try making it totally dairy free next time 🙂
