If you’ve been here a bit, you might know I love a good thrift store find! For quite some time, I was in search for a barstool at the thrift store to act as a stand for my ProOne Water Filter. I could have just bought one at the store, but I knew if I was patient enough, I’d score one for the fraction of the price. Well, my patience paid off and I was able to snag this tall wooden barstool for only $5!
I sat for a while trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the barstool and my vision was a little different than the final product. My original plan was to stain the top and paint the bottom, but the top was a little too scratched and I didn’t think it was going to look great, so onto plan B, which was to paint the whole thing. I was able to complete this project for less than $10 (which includes the cost of the barstool itself) because I had the paint on hand! I’m super happy with how it turned out and I hope you gain some inspiration from this post!

STEPS TO FOR A DIY BARSTOOL MAKEOVER
Wipe the barstool down with a sanitizing wipe or soapy water to remove grease and grime. Allow the barstool to dry before moving to the next step.
Lightly sand the barstool and wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust. See notes if you plan to stain.
Apply a durable paint with a brush or roller to the top and the legs. Repeat until you’ve gotten the desired coverage and allow the barstool to dry the recommended time.
Wrap the cotton twine around the bottom rung and secure it with a double knot. Then continue to wind the twine around the two rungs, making sure to keep good tension.
Keep each strand close to each other to ensure a clean look. Repeat for the top rung.
Tie both ends (beginning and end) of the twine together and hide the knot in between the twine to finish it off!
NOTES
- If you plan to stain any part of the barstool, I suggest removing the old finish with oven cleaner. It’s my favorite way to strip varnish!
- If you want a more durable shelf, use rope or braided twine instead.
- I chose to create a simple design on the top of the barstool, but you could use a stencil or something else to create your own design on top.
