This DIY refreshing scalp spray is great for freshening up your roots, creating some extra shine and may also help promote hair growth!

**UPDATED AUGUST 1, 2025**
As women, our hair goes through a lot, whether that be hormonal changes, stress or just damage from coloring and using heat. This can often times leave our hair feeling dull, broken, thin and/or damaged. I’ve personally experienced many of these issues and was looking for something natural that could bring a little life back to my hair. For years now I’ve been a fan of using weekly oil treatments to help nourish my hair, but I needed something I could use daily that not only would help my hair grow and maintain its health, but also give my scalp a little boost in between washes.
That’s where this DIY scalp refreshing spray comes in. It can (and should) be used daily directly on the scalp to help remove and diminish oils, hair product residue and dirt. It helps reduce itchy scalp and helps to soak up the natural oils our scalp secretes, which in turn helps with the appearance of hair in between washes. And if those benefits aren’t enough, this scalp spray can also help promote hair growth, so it’s a win all around if you ask me!

FAQs
What are the best essential oils for hair growth?
Let’s first talk about some of the most effective essential oils that are beneficial for hair growth!
- Rosemary: Rosemary essential oil helps to stimulate hair follicles, increase blood flow to the scalp and helps with hair growth.
- Peppermint: Peppermint essential oil helps improve circulation of the scalp and can help promote hair growth.
- Lavender: Lavender essential oil can help to soothe the scalp and help hair growth faster.
- Cedarwood: Cedarwood essential oil can help to balance the oils on the scalp and promote hair growth and prevent hair loss.
- Tea Tree: Tea tree essential oil has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which can help improve the health of the scalp. It can help to remove debris from hair follicles to allow hair to grow easier. Tea tree can also help with dandruff.
Will this hair growth spray work for me?
Although I wish I could say this spray will help anyone with hair growth, the reality is that it won’t work for everyone. It can be great to help with hair loss after giving birth or for hair loss due to stress, but it’s not guaranteed. If you have an underlying problem that is causing your hair loss, likely that will need to be addressed before something like this spray will work. HOWEVER, this spray still works great at refreshing your scalp and helping your hair last longer between washes! So that’s a big win in my opinion!
How do I use this DIY scalp spray?
- Shake the spray bottle, then apply the DIY scalp refreshing spray to your roots and gently massage in in with a scalp massager or comb it through the hair.
- The spray can be applied on damp or dry hair. If you’re using it on damp hair, allow your hair to air dry before applying any dry shampoo. You could also dry your hair with a hair dryer if needed.
- Reapply once or twice more throughout the day for best results, especially for hair growth.
- If your goal is not hair growth, but simply for refreshing your hair, I recommend using it before styling. This spray will help to loosen up dirt and debris from the scalp and give it a nice refresh!
Can I use different essential oils in this recipe?
There are a few other essential oils that are good for hair growth that can be included in this scalp refreshing spray or swapped for other oils in this recipe. Here’s a quick list:
- Lemongrass
- Clary sage
- Ylang-ylang
- Thyme

Ingredients
Essential Oils: The essential oils in this scalp spray work to soothe the scalp, help improve blood flow and circulation to the scalp and reduce the amount of bacterial growth on the scalp.
Witch Hazel: Witch hazel is a type of natural astringent that can be used on the skin, which includes the scalp! It’s naturally anti-inflammatory and has antibacterial properties, which makes it great for soothing minor irritations, helps reduce dandruff and oils on the scalp, and may promote hair growth.
Water: Water is, well water. There’s not much to say there, but the water in this recipe helps to dilute the essential oils so they’re not as harsh on the scalp. I recommend using distilled water, or at the very least, filtered water.
How to Make DIY Refreshing Scalp Spray
TOOLS YOU MAY NEED
- 2 oz spray bottle
- Mini funnel (optional)
INGREDIENTS
- 10 drops cedarwood EO
- 10 drops peppermint EO
- 10 drops rosemary EO
- 5 drops lavender EO
- 5 drops tea tree EO
- 1 tsp witch hazel
- Filtered water
DIRECTIONS
To an amber glass spray bottle add in all the essential oils.

Next, pour in witch hazel. I just do a full squirt of it, but you could measure 1 tsp out.

Fill the rest of the bottle with filtered or distilled water.

Twist the spray onto the bottle, give it a shake and it’s ready to use!

NOTES
- If you have a dry scalp, I recommend using an alcohol free witch hazel.
- Add in a pinch of epsom salt to help with a dry scalp.
- You may notice some tingling when you first apply this spray due to the peppermint oil. Don’t worry, it will subside quickly!
- If you find the spray too strong, you can add the same ingredients to a 4 oz bottle instead.
- This spray should not be used on children under the age of six due to the rosemary and peppermint essential oils. Also beware if you are pregnant or nursing. You may want to adjust the ingredients to suit your needs.
- For kids, I recommend going with the diluted version in the 4 oz spray bottle, but use your own discretion.

Where do you get the bottles and funnel?
I got them on Amazon and the funnel comes with them! I’ll link them in my post, but just search “2 oz glass spray bottles” and they should come up.
Where can I buy the oils and the funnel please?
I buy my oils from both Plant Therapy and Young Living! The funnel is something that usually comes with empty essential oil roller balls or the bottles that I have linked ๐
What is supposed to be the carrier oil/liquid here?
Wont it be too strong for the skin with all the essential oils? I see many others using pumpkin seed, castor or argon oil.
Also, do you think I could use a serum at a different time of the day? Does it make the hair look oily?
Thanks for the question! I haven’t noticed that this spray makes my hair oily. Here are two ways I’ve used this. You can spray it in your hair at the roots and brush through at night before you go to bed. You can also spray it on damp hair and allow it to either air dry and blow dry it before styling. I typically apply any serums to just the ends of my hair so the two wouldn’t interact. My suggestion is just to play around with it and see what works best for your hair type. Hope that helps and please let me know if you have any other questions!
Hi there! So this spray does contain a large amount of essential oils, but it is diluted since water and witch hazel are added. You could add a bit of a carrier oil if you wanted, but it could make the hair oily. If you try adding a carrier oil, I would start with a little and use this spray at night just to see how your hair reacts. Hope that helps!
At what times would you say to use it? Would I have to wash my hair everyday because of it?
Great question! I like to use it right before bed and in the morning before I style (either let my hair dry or blow dry). This shouldn’t make your hair greasy, it should actually help to refresh your scalp a little bit. I wash my hair about twice and week and use this almost every day. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Can I replace the filtered water with rose water?
Absolutely!
