Add a little Valentine’s Day charm to your home with this easy-to-make handmade air dry clay hearts garland.

For me, Valentine’s Day is a little special. It’s the time of year that my husband and I officially started dating almost 20 years ago, which is crazy to think about. It’s also special because it’s a time of year where I now get to show my children some extra love. Of course they get showered with love every moment I can and there’s so many days that aren’t Valentine’s Day where they get little treats or trinkets, but when you have kids, I feel like the day is just a bit more special.
I realize a lot of people feel lonely or sad on Valentine’s Day, and I totally understand how much of a bummer the day could be, but the way I look at it, it’s more than just a commercialized romantic holiday. It’s a day you can show love and appreciation to anyone including friends, neighbors, children, or whoever you feel called to treat. You don’t have to be extravagant or get gifts just to get gifts, unless of course you want to. One way I wanted to add a little charm this year was with this fun air dry clay heart garland. This was a super fun project and one that was fun to incorporate my children into. It adds a little bit of rustic charm to our dining room and I love how it turned out!

How to Make Air Dry Clay Hearts
Tools You May Need:
- Heart cookie cutter
- Knife or clay cutting tool
- Round piping tip or round skewer
- Rolling pin
- Paint brush (optional)
Materials Needed:
- Air dry clay
- Cotton twine
- Acrylic paint (optional)
Directions
Remove a section of air dry clay and knead it in your hands.

With a rolling pin, roll out the clay to about 1/8 of an inch thick.

Using a heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out the desired amount of hearts.

Add two holes to the top of the heart with a piping tip or round skewer.

Allow the air dry clay to dry for several hours or overnight.

Once the clay is dry, paint the hearts with acrylic paint and allow them to dry fully.

Weave twine through the two holes on each heart.

Cut the twine from the roll, leaving 6 inches on either side, then tie a loop on each end of the twine and hang your air dry clay heart garland.

Notes
- If you don’t have a heart shaped cookie cutter, you can print various hearts on a sheet of paper, cut them out and use them as stencils.
- Use lace or other fabrics to create beautiful indentations on the clay before it dries.
- You can seal the hearts with a spray sealant if desired.
- The thinner the clay, the lighter the garland will be.
