These 5 DIY non-toxic cleaning product recipes are easy to make with everyday ingredients and leave your home feeling fresh and clean.

When it comes to living a cleaner lifestyle and using more non-toxic products in the home and less store-bought products, it can be intimidating to start making swaps. Some of the easiest swaps I’ve made are my cleaning products. Often times you can make homemade cleaning products with regular household items like baking soda, distilled white vinegar and more, that are just as good, if not better than store bought brands, with cleaner and simpler ingredients. And while I still think there’s a place for some store-bought cleaners, I love being able to use non-toxic cleaners in my home the majority of the time. Check out my top 5 DIY non-toxic cleaning product recipes I use for every day cleaning in my home.

5 DIY Non-Toxic Cleaning Product Recipes for the Home

1. Homemade Grout Cleaner

Homemade grout cleaner only uses three simple household ingredients and is incredibly effective at cleaning grout. Baking soda works to scrub away dirt, while dish soap cleans and peroxide brightens. This 3 ingredient grout cleaner can be used on light and dark colored grout and is easy enough to whip up in small batches or in larger quantities to have on hand.

How to Make Homemade Grout Cleaner

Tools

  • Container or old cup
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing spoon
  • Old toothbrush or grout brush

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tbs dish soap

Instructions

  1. In a container, mix together baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and dish soap.
  2. Apply the DIY grout cleaner to an old toothbrush or grout brush and scrub it into the grout.
  3. Leave the mixture on for 5 minutes, scrub, then wipe clean with a warm cloth.
  4. Repeat the above steps as needed.

NOTES

  • This DIY grout cleaner can be abrasive, so you may want to wear rubber gloves when using this solution.
  • It can take some elbow grease to get grout clean, so you may have to scrub to help clean your grout.
  • This amount of DIY grout cleaner covers a smaller surface area, so you may need to double or triple the recipe, depending on how much grout you need to clean.

2. Natural DIY All-Purpose Cleaner

Homemade natural all-purpose cleaner is made with simple non-toxic ingredients and works to clean all surfaces of the home, including mirrors and glass!

How to Make Natural DIY All-Purpose Cleaner

Tools

  • 16 oz spray bottle
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoon

Ingredients

  • 15 oz filtered water
  • 2 tbs Castile soap
  • 20-25 drops peppermint essential oil or your favorite essential oil(s)

Instructions

  1. Fill your glass spray bottle half full with filtered or purified water.
  2. Add Castile soap to the bottle.
  3. Then add in your favorite essential oil or oils. I like to use peppermint, but you can use any blend.
  4. Top the bottle off with the rest of the water, add the spray nozzle, shake and it’s ready to use!

Notes

  • It’s important to use filtered or purified water in this because plain tap water can contain bacteria that you don’t want present in your cleaner. If you don’t have access to either filtered or purified water, you can simply boil water, then allow it to cool before using it.
  • I like to use a glass bottle for my homemade products that contain essential oils because essential oils can break plastic down over time.
  • You can use a small funnel to make the process of making this cleaner easier. The funnel I’m using came with a set of small spray bottles, but you could use a regular funnel for this as well.
  • Store this natural all-purpose cleaner in a cool, dark place.
  • Shake the bottle prior to each use.

3. Homemade Disinfecting Cleaner

Homemade disinfecting cleaner sanitizes surfaces and cuts through grease and grime, making it the perfect cleaner to have on hand for kitchen clean-ups and more. This cleaner can be infused with pine needles to make homemade pine sol or citrus peels for a fresh scent.

How to Make Homemade Disinfecting Cleaner

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups vinegar
  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • Pine needles
  • 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
  • 30 drops lemon essential oil (optional)

Tools

  • Quart mason jar with a lid
  • Measuring cups
  • Scissors
  • Flannel or cotton fabric (optional)
  • Amber spray bottle (optional)

Instructions

  1. Collect pine needles of your choosing, then cut them down to a size that will fit in a quart sized mason jar.
  2. In a quart sized mason jar, combine distilled white vinegar, water and as many pine needles as you can fit in the jar. Be sure that all the pine needles are fully submerged to prevent mold from occurring.
  3. Allow the pine needles to soak in the vinegar solution for one week in a cool, dark place.
  4. After one week, remove the pine needles from the vinegar solution.
  5. Then add the rubbing alcohol and essential oils.
  6. Add the homemade disinfecting cleaner to a spray bottle or cut squares of fabric scraps to make homemade disinfecting wipes.
  7. Use the disinfecting cleaner to clean countertops, bathrooms and more!

Notes

  • Store your homemade cleaner in a cool dark place.
  • You can use any pine needles you’d like in this recipe. Some are more fragrant than others, but you can use whatever you have available.
  • You could use citrus peels as well like lemon or orange to get the same cleaning effect.
  • This disinfecting cleaner may cause the rings of your mason jar to rust, so I like using these plastic lids instead.

4. Fabric Refresher Spray (Homemade Febreze)

Fabric refresher spray, also known as homemade Febreze, is super simple to make and really works to freshen the air and fabric, leaving your home smelling amazing!

How to Make Fabric Refresher Spray

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup unflavored vodka or isopropyl alcohol
  • 25-30 drops essential oils
  • Distilled water or water that’s been boiled and cooled

Tools

  • Measuring cup
  • Funnel (optional)
  • Amber spray bottle

Instructions

  1. Measure vodka and pour it into a clean spray bottle, preferably glass.
  2. Add your favorite essential oils. I used lavender and orange for a nice, fresh scent.
  3. Fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water or water that’s been boiled and cooled.
  4. Add the sprayer to the bottle, give it a mix and it’s ready for use!
  5. Use this DIY fabric refreshing spray on your bedding, upholstered furniture, rugs and even as an air freshening spray!

Notes

  • You can use isopropyl alcohol or witch hazel in place of vodka.
  • Use this fabric refreshing spray on bed linens, carpets and rugs, furniture and even as a room spray.
  • For an unscented version, simply use vodka and distilled water!
  • I recommend using a glass bottle for this spray as essential oils can eat at plastic over time.

5. DIY Laminate Floor Cleaning Solution

DIY laminate floor cleaning solution is easy to make for refill spray mops or to use with a traditional mop and bucket. It leaves laminate floors clean and streak-free!

How to Make DIY Laminate Floor Cleaning Solution

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup isopropyl alcohol
  • 1 tbs dish soap (I use Dawn)
  • 40-50 drops essential oil (optional)
  • Distilled water or water that has been boiled

Tools

  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoon
  • Funnel

Instructions

  1. Add distilled white vinegar, isopropyl alcohol, dish soap and essential oils to the bottle of your mop and shake to mix.
  2. Fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water.
  3. Insert the bottle into the mop and it’s ready to use!

Notes

  • The essential oils are optional, however you might find the alcohol smell a bit overwhelming if you don’t use them.
  • This can be used for any type of mop, including a mop and bucket.
  • It’s important to use distilled water or water that’s been boiled to reduce the amount of bacteria in the solution, especially since it will be stored.
  • I like to make a double batch to have it on hand when I need to refill my mop!
