Learn how to paint a KitchenAid mixer in just a few easy steps to transform it from boring, into a beautiful staple piece for your kitchen.
Almost nine years ago, I received a KitchenAid mixer for my bridal shower from my husband’s family and I was beyond thrilled. It was something I had wanted to for a long time and I was so happy to have it for my kitchen. It has gotten so much use over the years and is such a staple piece in my kitchen, but aesthetically, I wasn’t in love with it. Now to be fair, I registered for that specific color. At the time, I didn’t think of how it would actually look in my kitchen.
Now, in the whole grand scheme of things, the color of my KitchenAid doesn’t really matter. It works great and I’ve had no issues with it. However, I’ve recently found myself in a place where I want my surroundings to feel and look appealing and beautiful to me. I want to create a space I enjoy being in. And since I’m home quite often, I figured if there’s an easy way to turn something I don’t love looking at, into something I do enjoy looking at, then why not?

Can you paint a KitchenAid Mixer?
This was a question I asked myself so many times and it was something I was terrified to do. KitchenAid mixers are very expensive and if you screw it up, there’s really no way of going back. However, I watched several videos and read several posts and determined what approach would work best to paint my mixer. The best advice I have is to use the right products and to take your time. If you do that, you’ll have a beautiful result!

HOW TO PAINT A KITCHENAID MIXER
TOOLS YOU MAY NEED
MATERIALS YOU MAY NEED
- 400 grit sand paper
- Degreasing cleaner
- Spray primer
- Spray paint (Behr Matte Chalk Gingham)
- Spray clear coat
- Painter’s tape
DIRECTIONS: HOW TO PAINT A KITCHENAID MIXER
Using a screw driver, remove the metal pieces of your KitchenAid mixer, along with the back vented portion of that covers the motor, and set aside.
Wipe down your KitchenAid mixer with a degreasing cleaner to remove any dirt and grime.
Wrap up and cover the cord and motor with a plastic bag and tape. Be sure to really cover it so no dust or paint gets into the motor. Also tape off any other areas you don’t want to paint, like the levers.
Using 400 grit sand paper, sand down the entire mixer. The goal is to remove the finish (the shine). Then wipe the mixer to remove the dust.
In a well-vented area, coat the mixer with a spray primer. Add 2-3 coats according to the directions on the can to achieve your desired coverage. Allow the mixer to dry for 24 hours before moving to the next step.
Again using 400 grit sand paper, gently remove any build up from the primer to ensure a smooth finish. Then wipe the mixer to remove any dust.
In a well-vented area, coat the mixer with your chosen colored spray paint. Add 2-3 coats according to the directions on the can. If needed, sand lightly in between coats to ensure a smooth finish. Then allow the mixer to dry for 24 hours before moving to the next step.
Finally, coat the entire KitchenAid mixer with a clear coat to seal everything in. Apply 1-2 coats according to the directions on the bottle. Then allow the mixer to dry 24 hours.
Remove the tape, then add all the metal finishings and the vent on the back and your mixer is ready to use!
NOTES
- Keep all the screws in a plastic bag so you don’t lose them during the process.
- I chose to use all matte paint and clear coat, but choose your spray paint and finish according to your desired final look.
- I chose to spray the levers and knobs white, but if you want to keep them black, then be sure to tape them.
- I sprayed all the metal components with the matte clear coat, but that’s totally optional.
- The most important component of this project is to take your time and go slow.
