About a year ago, I started making my own homemade products as a way to start eliminating harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances from my home. One of the first products I tried out was a body butter recipe, and I fell in love. So, I decided to try my hand at making my own recipe! Homemade whipped body butter is really easy to make, doesn’t require a lot of ingredients and is totally customizable. The nice thing is, once you buy these ingredients, they can be used in so many other homemade products. I have a whole guide on how to start making your own homemade products that breaks down ingredients and their uses! Check it out if you’re at all interested in making the transition to natural products!

HOW TO USE HOMEMADE WHIPPED BODY BUTTER
Whipped body butter is great to use all over the body, but it is especially excellent at moisturizing dry, cracked hands and feet because of the natural butters and oils in it. If you’re using it on your feet, the best time to apply it is before bed. Simply rub it all over the feet, slip on some socks (I know it feels weird) and wait until the morning. Your feet will be in much better shape!
You can also use this body butter on cuticles, dry elbows and knees, and as a stretch mark cream or belly lotion during pregnancy. This body butter may not eliminate stretch marks, but it will help keep your skin nourished and moisturized, which will hopefully help with any pain associated with stretch marks during pregnancy.
I also loving this body butter on my kids because it keeps their skin nice and hydrated. It’s especially great during the fall and winter when it starts to get cold and dry. What’s great about this recipe is that you can adjust the fragrance or choose to eliminate it completely. So if you don’t feel comfortable using essential oils on your kids, you can keep your body butter unscented.
Lastly, this body butte makes a great handmade Christmas gift or a gift for any other time of the year. Place the body butter in small 4 ounce mason jars, tie a bow around the jar, add a cut label and you’ve got the perfect homemade gift. I think anyone who were to receive a handmade gift like this would absolutely love it!

TOOLS YOU MAY NEED
- Double broiler or pan and heat proof bowl
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Stand mixer or hand mixer
- Spatula
- Airtight glass container
INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 cup cocoa butter
- 1/4 cup shea butter
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1 tbs jojoba oil
- 1 tbs sweet almond oil
- 1-2 tbs arrowroot powder
- 6-8 drops each of lavender, orange and lemon essential oils
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE WHIPPED BODY BUTTER
- Start by boiling a pot of water.
- Once the water is boiling, add a heat safe bowl over top the water, but not touching it.
- Add in the cocoa butter, shea butter and coconut oil and allow them to completely melt.
- Once melted, remove the bowl from the heat and allow it to cool for 3-5 minutes.
- Stir in the jojoba oil, almond oil and essential oils.
- Place the bowl in the refrigerator for about an hour until the mixture has solidified, but you can make an indent with your finger.
- Add the mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer (you can use a hand mixer as well) and begin to beat it.
- After about a minute, scrape down the sides and add the arrowroot powder.
- Start slow and then continue to beat for another couple of minutes. You’ll know when it’s ready when the mixture turns more white.
- Add the homemade body butter to a glass airtight container and enjoy!
NOTES
- Please note that some essential oils, like citrus oils, are photosensitive, meaning when you apply them and you expose your skin to the sun, they can increase your chances for sunburn and blistering. Here is an article about essential oil safety and photosensitivity of oils. You can use other oil combinations, depending on what scents and benefits you’re looking for.
- You can substitute corn starch for arrowroot powder or omit the arrowroot powder all together in this recipe. The arrowroot powder makes this body butter less oily, but it’s not essential to the recipe.
- You can substitute any of the butters for mango butter, use a combination of mango, cocoa and shea, or even use just one type of butter.
- Omit the sweet almond oil and/or jojoba oil if you’d prefer or if you don’t have any on hand. You could also use something like Vitamin E oil in their place.
- And airtight glass container is best to use for storage since essential oils can break down plastics over time.
- Keep this body butter at room temperature in a cool dark place. If your home runs warm or you live in a warm climate, you can keep this in the refrigerator, but it will become hard.
- Because this body butter is on the more oily side, I recommend using this at night to allow it to work its magic. I really like this for dry hands and for after shaving.

This looks wonderful! I’ve been making and using a homemade body cream for a few years now, but I’d love to try this body butter! The few times I’ve had to revert back to storebought lotion, I can’t get over how synthetic and full of chemicals it feels on my skin! So grateful for this recipe! Thanks! 🙂
