Overview of the TeeMars Sourdough Starter Kit
The TeeMars sourdough starter kit was made to help jumpstart your sourdough bread baking with many of the essential tools you’ll need to get started. Below are a few of the advantages of using a kit like this:
Large Capacity Glass Jar for Your Sourdough Starter
The large capacity 34oz glass jar is great for holding your sourdough starter. You can easily add flour and water to feed your starter, thanks to the wide opening. It comes with a screw on lid, similar to a mason jar, that can be used to store your starter in the refrigerator in between feedings. When you’re ready to feed your sourdough starter again, the kit also includes a cloth cover to allow the starter to become active, while also keeping any bugs or debris out of the starter.
Two Useful Tools for Tracking Your Sourdough Starter
This sourdough kit comes with thermometer stickers that can be attached to the large capacity jar, or any vessel, that helps to monitor the temperature of your starter once it’s fed. The best temperature for your sourdough starter to be in to become active and bubbly is between 70°F and 80°F. Additionally, to track the progress of your starter after feeding, the kit comes with a strap that can be placed on the jar that tracks not only feeding time, but also the level of the rise. You can easily move the strap sideways to mark the time of the feed, as well as up and down to track the level in which it started.
Two Proofing Baskets
This kit comes with two silicone proofing baskets (a 9″ round basket and a 10″ oval basket) that are made of BPA-free food grade silicone that can withstand temperatures up to 446°F. Compared to easy-mold rattan banneton baskets, the TeeMars proofing baskets are smooth, won’t give you splinters, will never mold, are easy to clean and are overall safer for you and your family. Additionally, they’re super easy to fold and store, saving space in your kitchen.
Other Nice to Have Sourdough Bread Baking Tools
This kit also comes with a silicone spatula, metal scraper, silicone brush and knife that are all great to have when making sourdough bread!

How to Use the TeeMars Sourdough Kit to Make Sourdough Bread
Note: I’m using the Farmhouse on Boone Beginner’s Sourdough Recipe for this example.
If don’t have an established starter, you can start one, simply using flour and water. Here’s a great article to easily make your own sourdough starter. Simply follow the directions in the article and use the the large jar that comes in this kit to store it! Once your starter has been established, simply add the lid and store it in the refrigerator between feedings.
When your’e ready to make sourdough bread, remove your sourdough starter from the refrigerator, attach one of the thermometers from the kit to the jar, then feed your starter a combination of water and flour. Next, cover the jar with the cloth top and let it sit for 6-8 hours to become active and bubbly.
Once the starter is active, combine the starter, water, flour and salt, then allow the dough to sit and rest.
Perform a series of stretch and folds.
Shape the dough and place in a floured silicone proofing basket. For this loaf, I used the round basket.
Cover the loaf and allow it to continue fermenting in the refrigerator.
Once the dough has finished fermenting, remove it from the proofing basket, dust with flour and score the top using the knife included in the kit.
Bake the sourdough bread in a dutch oven and enjoy!
Conclusion and Final Thoughts
Things I love:
- All components of the kit are easy to clean and dishwasher safe.
- The materials used to make this kit are high quality and meet food grade standards.
- The bread proofing baskets are durable and easy to store.
- The kit comes with other nice to have accessories.
Things to note:
- This kit does not teach you how to actually create a sourdough starter and make a sourdough loaf, although it does give some vague information which helps you understand the gist of the process.
- Typically to make a loaf of sourdough bread, you’ll also need a kitchen scale and dutch oven, which is not included in the kit.
- The kit doesn’t come with instructions on how to use the components, especially the knife. If you’re totally new, you’ll have to search for instructions on how to attach the blade to the handle. It’s actually pretty simple, but something I had to research quickly to get right. However, I’ve been informed that newer kits will have an instruction manual.
- For all the components you get, the price is good and it’s a great jumping point into your sourdough journey.
